Commemoration: Battle of Vimy Ridge

The City of Deux-Montagnes has lowered its flags to half-mast to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge which took place in France in 1917. The Municipal Council of Deux-Montagnes and its Municipal Employees would like to express their gratitude and show their respect to the Veterans of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 185.

A little bit of history about the Battle of Vimy Ridge: Canadians win the battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. From 9 to 12 April 1917, fighting raged in the hills above Vimy small town in the region Pas de Calais in northern France. Four divisions of the Canadian Army with a total of 15,000 men going over the top of the German fortress built in 1914 to protect the coal mines to the north. Half a century later, in March 1967, the journalist Gérald Lachance went to Vimy to collect the testimonies of those who lived through this important period of the First World War, Lieutenant Colonel Leo Patenaude.
