The City of Deux-Montagnes takes part in the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge

Deux-Montagnes November 9, 2021 – The city of Deux-Montages is pleased to be working with  Take Action on Radon , a coalition of national health organizations, by providing a radon test kit to the first 100 citizens of Deux-Montagnes who will participate in the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge starting today.

What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the ground. This gas enters all buildings in contact with the ground and can move around the building, including on upper floors. Radon is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It is therefore impossible to detect it by the senses.

Being the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, radon gas can be found in elevated concentrations in homes across the country.  While Canada has had a National Radon Plan for over a decade, many Canadians remain unaware of the deadly gas.

“Testing for radon is simple to do, and there are effective solutions available to reduce radon levels in homes where radon levels are elevated,” says Pam Warkentin, Executive Director of CARST and Project Manager,Take Action on Radon.   “The first step is to know your radon level.  Every home needs to test for radon – it’s that simple.”

How to register for the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge

Starting today, November 9, the first 100 residents of Deux-Montagnes who complete the   online registration form   will receive a FREE radon test kit from the Take Action on Radon coalition.

The distribution of those radon test kits will take place at the Deux-Montagnes Library between November 24 and December 2nd. Instructions for using properly the 100-day test at home will be included in the kit.

Following the testing period, citizens will have to return the radon detector to the Library so that the kits can be sent to the laboratory. After a few weeks, each participant will receive an individual report by email.

November 23 at 7 p.m. : free Radon Information Session online

Program participants are encouraged to attend an online information session to learn more about the health effects of radon, Health Canada’s recommendations, etc. More details on this session will be sent to registered citizens.
