Eco-Tip for the Month of September

For a Greener Return to School!

Challenge your family and choose to bring an eco-friendly lunch box with you for work or school lunches! The time for using plastic containers, disposable bags and items wrapped in individual containers is over!  Instead, choose to be more environmentally-friendly, it’s easy and good for our environment.

If everyone brought an eco-friendly lunch box with them, imagine how much less waste would be produced each year!

 Some tips to help you:

Use reusable containers for sandwiches, vegetables, cookies, yogurt and a thermos for hot meals and soup: It’s all about re-use.

  • Eat with metal utensils even at school or at work rather than using and throwing away plastic utensils.
  • Use a washable cup or bottle for beverages to avoid using plastic or Styrofoam cups. If you decide to use disposable cups, choose ones that are made of recyclable cardboard or that decompose faster.
  • Use a cloth or reusable lunch box instead of a plastic or paper bag.
  • Avoid excess packaging by eliminating the purchase of individually packaged products. Buy large sizes that you can transfer into smaller containers. This is the principle of source reduction!
  • Carefully assess the quantity of food consumed daily to avoid waste.

Other small eco-friendly things that can be done such as:

  • Go to work or school on foot, by bike or by public transportation. If that isn’t possible, try carpooling instead!
  • Recycle and compost all the remaining contents in your lunch box. These are the principles of recycling and recovery!
  • Bring back and wash plastic bags for reuse rather than throw them in the garbage
  • Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins
  • Enjoy cooking delicious dishes, muffins or homemade cookies
  • Buy more local and organic products.
