Budget for 2016 adopted

Last December 10th, the City of Deux-Montagnes has presented its budget for 2016. Again this year, the budget features debt reduction and a freeze on spending, with a continued focus on sound management of public funds.

Debt reduction, spending freeze and tax increase below inflation at 1.2 %

Operational and structural changes have made it possible to maintain existing services, reduce debt and, especially, limit tax increases. The Deux-Montagnes municipal administration has succeeded in reducing spending to a significant extent, with a near-freeze (0.5%) again this year. This sound management has not come at the expense of services to the public, which have been maintained or even, in some cases, improved.

The average tax increase for Deux-Montagnes residents will be below the rate of inflation for a third consecutive year. For 2016, in fact, the impact of the budget on a normal tax bill amounts to a1.2% increase for homes of average value – well below the projected rate of inflation over the coming year.

It should be noted here that a new property assessment roll has been submitted for 2016-2018. In order spare the impact on taxation, it was decided to reduce the rate per assessed $100 valuation from 88 cents to 84 cents, a decrease of nearly 5%.

The City of Deux-Montagnes will continue its policy, initiated in the fall of 2013, which has resulted in an impressive turnaround in its finances, making it possible to ensure the sustainability and quality of our public services.

In conclusion, Mayor Denis Martin would like to thank the councillors and employees of the City of Deux-Montagnes, who have worked so hard to deliver a disciplined, balanced budget that respects the ability of residents to pay while maintaining the excellent services available to them.
